The Darling Bud (Poetry)

27th August 2017
With all the promise of a bud
that swells to sun’s warm smile
she passed the months of puberty
a thoughtful, gentle child

Trust sustained her through the time
each season took to turn
slow-pumping blood the patient beat
her green too pure to burn

But suddenly rogue Summer came
its heat as fierce as frost
and ruined her right to her heart
she withered and was lost

Now with the Spring this tree awakes
one aging branch stays bare
and dreams its darling bud survives
unspoilt to blossom there
